On Sorrel Day, Major Jessie R. W. Jones, CD was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Commanding Officer of The Royal regiment of Canada. LCol Jones replaces LCol Cliff Trollope who completed his three-year tour of Duty with the Royals. We commend LCol Trollope for the splendid leadership he provided while commanding the regiment. LCol Trollope has a very positive leadership style and provided praise wherever he saw it. He ensured very competent members of the Regiment were in every key appointment and promoted consistently good leadership and performance throughout the Regiment. The morale at every level has never been higher. The Royals consistently provide more members on every tasking than they are required to. Given any job, they take pride in performing it at a higher standard than required and better than any other Regiment in Ontario. This consistently high level performance is a great source of pride among everyone in the Regiment. Morale is maintained at a high level and with good reason. We all thank LCol Trollope for his great contribution to the Regiment.
LCol Jessie Jones was born in Toronto and has lived in Newfoundland, the Northwest Territories and Ontario. He attended Trinity College School in Port Hope and graduated from University of Toronto with a BA degree in History &Near Eastern Archaeology. He joined The Queen’s Own Rifles in 1992 and transferred to The Royal Regiment of Canada in 1993. He was commissioned as an Officer in 1994. He was a Platoon Commander, served with the anti-armour platoon and was Course Commander for a number of courses. Jessie was promoted Captain in 1998 and served as 2ic of an Infantry Company. In 1999 he was deployed overseas in Macedonia & Kosovo on Operation “Kinetic” as G3 Operations. In 2006, he attended the Canadian Land Forces Command & Staff College in Kingston and completed the Army Operations Course. He was promoted to Major and Commanded the Rifle Company for two years. Jessie was then appointed Operations Officer and Deputy Commanding Officer. Jessie is employed full time as a Staff Officer at Land Forces Central Area. He is a Section Head in the G3 Branch of the General Staff as G3 Training. He is employed in this position while concurrently serving with the Regiment. LCol Jones lives in Toronto with his wife Sarika Singh-Jones. |

Ahoy from Afghanistan!
I hope this email finds you all doing well and in good health.
I know it’s been a while since I’ve been in touch since I left Canada but I’ve finally managed to find some time to write a solid email letting you know that I’m doing well, healthy and safe on this deployment to KAF (Kandahar Air Field) Afghanistan.
It’s been just over 30 days since my arrival here and things have been quite busy in the position I’m currently in. I’m working for the “ASIC” section (All Source Intelligence Centre) supporting the section as the Chief Clerk handling all administrative and financial needs for those currently serving on the base and on forward operating bases (FOBs). The issues I deal with here are not much different from the issues we deal with at home so the myriad of training I’ve had at home has helped me morph into this job very easily. The team I work with are all fantastic people with various backgrounds and are from all parts of Canada. I can’t get into too much detail on what the “ASIC” does via email but picture CSI Kandahar mixed with a typical command centre and that’s what you have.

I have now reached the halfway point of my tour and thought I would trespass on your time and bring you up to speed as to what I am doing in mission.
I have enjoyed my time at Kandahar Airfield and appreciated the opportunities to get out with the Commander and see the Districts and Forward Operating Bases in the Southern Region. However, within the next few days, I will be closing up shop here and moving to Kandahar City to finish off my tour. My old job as Advisor to the General will close out as his Area Of Responsibility no longer includes the City of Kandahar and it's focus on police and governance development. Therefore, his need for a policing advisor is minimal.

The Regiment and Cadets were on parade in Full Dress Scarlet Uniforms and performed a “Trooping of the Colours Ceremony.” Four Cadets dressed in Royal Grenadier Scarlet uniforms representing Pioneers marching ahead to clear the way for the troops.
The New Colours were on Parade, presented by HRH Prince Charles on 5 Nov 09, on that very cold day at Varsity Stadium. Colours are required to be consecrated before being taken into use. Capt The Rev Brian Flower placed the New Colours on an Alter of Drums constructed by the Band. He then conducted a ceremony to bless them.
After this, the Colour Party Officers received the New Colours and marched them across the front of the Parade so they could be viewed by all the Troops. The Old Colours will be deposited at the Cathedral of St James on Sunday 7 Nov 2010. The Trooping of the Colours Ceremony was well performed by the Regiment, led by the Cadet Pioneer group. It was very well done, especially considering the short time available for practice.
The march past began as the Regiment marched in Column in slow time. After passing the Saluting base, The Regiment turned right in Column of Route and changed into quick time for the balance of the Parade.
Capt The Rev Brian Flower then conducted the Memorial Service in Memory of the fallen at Mount Sorrel in WW I. The Sorrel Day Memorial service and Parade draws a large crowd of former members and the families of active members of the Regiment. This year the audience was even larger!
The Parade Square is a more attractive area of the Armoury than it used to be. All the Canadian Provincial and Territorial Flags fly from the balcony and it has been renovated for wheel chair access. There is even an elevator to the 2nd floor. Better quality tables are provided. The All Ranks Christmas Dinner takes place here with families of all ranks attending. It is a very popular event.
