DIEPPE REVISITED
by LT Peter Boyle

Inscription

Lt. Adam West and Lt. Peter Boyle at The Royal Regiment of
Canada Memorial on Puys Beach, Dieppe
On the 21 Apr, Lt Peter Boyle (58 COY) and LT Adam West (Toronto COY) visited Dieppe, France.
Their trip was both a personal pilgrimage and a point of importance for the Regiment.
While at Dieppe, Adam and Peter spent a considerable amount of time on the beach near Puys.
This was the landing spot of the Regiment nearly 63 years ago. LT Adam West had a
particular interest in Puys Beach as his grandfather, then Major Forbes West, landed there
on 19 Aug 1942. Major West was wounded and captured like so many other Royals on that
fateful day. LT West was able to walk the beach and have a better understanding of the
obstacles that his Grandfather and all Royals faced on the Beach. After the War, LCol Forbes
West commanded the Irish Regiment of Canada and later was promoted to BGen and
commanded 14 Militia Group in Toronto. After he retired from the Reserves BGen West
became the President of the Army Cadet League of Ontario.
Dieppe is a place that all members of the Regiment should attempt to visit sometime in
during their lifetime. It is a stark reminder of those who went before us and the hardships
they faced. It is difficult for serving members of the Regiment to fully appreciate what happened at
Puys Beach on the 19 Aug 1942. However, a walk of the beach, a gaze up the cliffs
and a moment of silence in memory of those who fell on the beach is the least that we can
do as members of The Royal Regiment of Canada.

CASH REGISTER TAPE PROGAM IS CANCELLED
The Association's Fund-raising program, collecting cash register tapes from A & P,
Dominion, Miracle Mart, or Ultra Mart, has been cancelled. John Hayward reports, A&P
demanded ever larger values of tapes to qualify for cash rewards. It was costing our members
more money in postage than the value of the tapes they mailed. Fewer tapes were being submitted
and the reward is less than the energy spent in time & effort to submit them. It was a good source
of up to $1,000 for our Education and Welfare Fund while it lasted and we thank A & P for
their support. But the time has come to pack it in and look to other ways to support our programs.
Many thanks to John Hayward and previously to Pat Hayward who did so much work to support
the Association.
